5 Ways To Create Glitz & Glam at Home

Shiny Surfaces

Nothing says glitz like reflective surfaces. Mirrors help bounce light around a room and mirrored furniture also adds sparkle. Consider changing out old hardware for something shiny like brass, silver, or chrome. These shiny surfaces immediately enhance a room and make it feel glam. For a more subtle look, opt for brushed brass or antique silver. These finishes are anything but dull and will give you that shine without sacrificing the glitz factor.

Sumptuous Fabrics

Billowing drapes—like a theatre stage curtain, rich materials like velvet for upholstery, raw silk for curtain panels, and glamorous animal prints like leopard, cheetah, and zebra—just be careful to not let it get tacky.

High quality fabrics are one of life’s ultimate luxuries. They can transform a room from basic to extraordinary. When selecting fabrics for a room, consider the textures and patterns that make you feel glamorous. Billowing drapes—akin to a theatre stage curtain— create a sense of drama and sumptuousness. Rich materials like velvet for upholstery and raw silk for curtain panels instantly make one feel pampered—like Marie Antoinette at Versailles. For a bit of sassy fun, use hints of animal prints like leopard, cheetah, and zebra. A cautionary word, though— the way to avoid animal prints feeling tacky is to use high-quality fabric. In other words, don’t even think of fleece cheetah as an option.

Sophisticated Black

Black is anything but boring. It goes with every color scheme and helps to ground a space while adding an air of sophistication. A black wall can be very dramatic especially if you hang a large gold-gilt framed mirror on it. Add a couple of antique brass candle sconces on either side along with a French settee underneath, and you’ve got the makings of a seriously glamorous room. If an entire wall—or dare I suggest room—of black is a bit much for you, consider using a piece or two of black furniture. A high gloss black desk with brass hardware conjures up feelings of glamour without being too girly. Even just a few touches of black throughout a room provide a counterpart for other elements.

Something Unexpected

Every room needs one unexpected thing to make it stand out. If you’re going for a glamorous feel, this can be fun. Why not gold leaf the ceiling? Why not hang a life size portrait on the wall? Why not upholster the walls in an exotic fabric? What about covering an entire wall in antiqued mirror tiles? Think about what would excite you every time you enter that room. Whatever makes you feel instantly sexy—that’s what you need more of! Glamorous rooms beckon and embrace with their femininity, soulfulness, and distinct personalities.

Sexy Lighting

Perhaps the most important element in a glitz & glam space is lighting. Even if you have the most gorgeous pieces in a room, if they aren’t lit properly, it’s all for naught. The best place to start is by putting overhead lights on dimmers. There’s nothing worse than a room that’s too bright—not sexy at all! It’s also important to have plenty of lighting options. In fact, each room should have at least 3 to 5 lamps. This allows you to control the amount of light at any given time, thus giving you the option to set a mood. For a truly spectacular effect, use pin lights to shine directly on specific pieces you want to draw attention to. Imagine a pin light perfectly hitting a gorgeous crystal bowl on a coffee table—breathtaking! Take things a step further by using uplights to highlight architectural features or illuminate curtain panels from below. These thoughtful touches help immensely to create a romantic atmosphere.
